What is fkm rubber?

what is fkm rubber?

FKM outperforms Nitrile (NBR), Neoprene (CR), Silicone, and EPDM in chemical resistance. While Nitrile offers cost advantages and good resistance to petroleum-based oils, FKM provides a significantly wider temperature range and superior chemical stability. Neoprene falls short of FKM in both heat and chemical resistance. Although Silicone offers excellent flexibility, it cannot match FKM’s chemical resistance. Similarly, EPDM is inferior to FKM in terms of hydrocarbon and high-temperature resistance.

What are the characteristics of FKM rubber?

1. Excellent chemical corrosion resistance (the core feature)

This is FKM’s trump card. It is extremely inert to most chemicals.
Oil resistance: Extremely resistant to hydrocarbons such as gasoline, diesel, lubricating oil, and hydraulic oil (ordinary rubber will swell when exposed to oil, while FKM is almost unchanged).
Acid and alkali resistance/solvent: Can withstand the erosion of strong acids, strong alkali, ketones, esters and other organic solvents.
Applicable scenarios: Chemical plant pipelines, automobile fuel systems.

2. Excellent heat resistance

The heat resistance of FKM far exceeds that of ordinary rubber (such as NBR, EPDM).
Continuous operating temperature: Typically up to 200°C – 250°C.
Extreme temperature: It can even withstand high temperatures of 300°C in a short period of time without melting or decomposing.
Thermal aging performance: After working at high temperature for a long time, its physical properties (such as elasticity, strength) decrease very slowly.

3. Excellent weather resistance and aging resistance

It is the “longevity champion” in the rubber industry and is very resistant to damage.
Ozone resistance/UV resistance: Not afraid of sun exposure and corrosion by ozone in the atmosphere. Even if it is used in harsh outdoor environments for several years, it will not crack or harden like ordinary rubber.
Weather resistance: Extremely suitable for long-term outdoor exposure applications.

4. Good physical and mechanical properties

Although it is known for its corrosion resistance, its mechanical strength is not bad either.
Tear resistance: It has good tear resistance and can withstand certain mechanical friction and impact.
Wear resistance: Excellent wear resistance under good lubrication conditions.

5. Air tightness (gas barrier)

The molecular structure of FKM is very dense.
It has extremely low permeability to gases (such as air, fuel vapor) and is an ideal material for manufacturing high-performance seals (such as O-rings) to effectively prevent gas leakage.

What are the advantages of FKM rubber?

1. High temperature resistance: long-term resistance to high temperatures of 200°C~250°C, with stable performance.
2. Chemical corrosion resistance: extremely resistant to oil, fuel, acid and alkali solvents (the core advantage).
3. Aging resistance: Anti-ultraviolet, anti-ozone, long service life, not easy to crack.
4. Good air tightness: dense molecular structure, extremely low gas permeability, and good sealing effect.
5. Flame retardant and self-extinguishing: It has good flame retardancy, extinguishes immediately after leaving the fire, and has high safety.

What are the advantages of FKM rubber?

1. Expensive: The cost of raw materials is high, usually several times that of ordinary rubber.
2. Poor low-temperature performance: cold resistance is limited, and it easily becomes hard, brittle, and loses elasticity at low temperatures.
3. Average wear resistance: Compared with materials such as polyurethane (PU), its physical wear resistance is weaker.
4. Limited steam resistance/acid and alkali resistance: Although it has good chemical resistance, it is not resistant to high temperature water vapor and strong 5. Polar solvents (such as ketones and esters).
6. Difficulty in processing: Due to the slow vulcanization speed and poor fluidity, the requirements for processing technology and molds are high.

What are the advantages of FKM rubber?

FKM rubber (fluorine rubber) is mainly used in 5 industries that require extremely high temperature resistance and chemical corrosion resistance:

1. Automotive industry (the largest application field): used in engines, gearboxes, and fuel systems (such as sealing gaskets, O-rings, oil seals), mainly to resist high temperatures and fuel corrosion.
2. Petrochemical industry: used as seals for pipelines, valves, and pumps, and can withstand various strong acids, strong alkalis, and organic solvents.
3. Aerospace: used in aircraft engines, hydraulic systems and fuel systems, adapting to extreme temperature differences and harsh environments at high altitudes.
4. Semiconductor manufacturing: Equipment used to manufacture chips is sealed because it can withstand high-purity corrosive gases and chemicals.
5. Energy and electricity: used for sealing components in oil extraction, natural gas transmission and nuclear power equipment.
