O-ring weight calculation
O-Ring Weight Calculator
When purchasing O-rings, the product price is only one part of the overall cost. Shipping and freight expenses are also important factors to consider, especially since transportation costs are often directly affected by the total package weight. To help customers estimate procurement and logistics costs more efficiently, KODA has developed an O-ring Weight Calculator.
This tool automatically calculates the volume of an O-ring and combines it with the specific gravity (density) of different rubber materials to provide an estimated weight for both individual pieces and bulk quantities. Users can quickly calculate the weight of O-rings made from materials such as NBR, Viton (FKM), Silicone, EPDM, HNBR, AFLAS, and more, making it easier to estimate packaging and shipping expenses accurately.
With this interactive online calculator, you can instantly obtain weight data for O-rings in various sizes and quantities, helping streamline purchasing decisions and logistics planning.
O-ring weight = volume × material density. The core is to first calculate the ring volume and then multiply by the corresponding material density.
Density reference of common materials (g/cm³)
1. Volume formula (most commonly used)
Known: inner diameter ID (mm), wire diameter CS (mm), density ρ (g/cm³)
Medium diameter MD = ID + CS
Volume V = π × (CS/2)² × π × MD = π² × CS² × MD / 4 (mm³)
Weight W = V × ρ / 1000 (g)
2. Simplified formulas (commonly used in engineering)
W = 0.002467 × CS² × (ID + CS) × ρ
How to Use the O-Ring Weight Calculator
With AS568 Dash Number
- Select o-ring material.
- Input AS568 Dash Number in the Size, then enter a value for Quantity.
- Instantly see Piece Weight and Total Weight render in lbs or kg.
- Change quantities as needed to see Total Weight update instantly.
With Dimensions
- Select o-ring material
- Toggle between Inches (IN) and Millimeters (MM).
- Input Cross Section and Inside Diameter.
- Enter a value for Quantity.
- Instantly see Piece Weight and Total Weight render in lbs or kg.
- Change quantities as needed to see Total Weight update instantly.
Note: This tool is to be used for reference only and will not yield precise unit weights. The most important factor for calculating o-ring weight is the density or specific gravity of the rubber compound. For simplicity purposes, we are using typical or average specific gravities for various material families.
