A composite sealing ring that seals against water and dust, and also shields against electromagnetic interference. Ordinary O-rings: only provide a seal (waterproof, dustproof, oilproof, and leak-proof). Electromagnetic shielding O-rings: incorporate conductive materials (silver, copper, nickel, graphite, silver-plated aluminum, etc.) into the rubber, making it both sealing and conductive.

Electromagnetic interference shielding O-rings and gaskets can be designed to:

Be highly weather-resistant, effectively preventing rain and snow intrusion (IP54, NEMA 3)
Be waterproof and leak-proof, able to withstand high-pressure cleaning (IP65, IP66, NEMA 4X)
Be submersible to prevent underwater ingress (IP67, NEMA 6)

Compounds for electromagnetic shielding O-rings and gaskets

Electromagnetic interference (EMI)/radio frequency (RF) shielding materials typically use silicone rubber or fluorosilicone rubber as a base material, filled with metal or metal-coated particles. Silicone rubber offers excellent resistance to water, ozone, and UV radiation, as well as a wide operating temperature range. Fluorosilicone rubber not only possesses all the advantages of silicone rubber but also enhances its resistance to fuels and solvents. Commonly used conductive fillers include silver-aluminum, silver-copper, nickel-aluminum, and nickel-graphite particles, which differ in cost, conductivity, and volume resistivity (VR, an indirect measure of shielding effectiveness).

Due to the higher cost of silver-based fillers, nickel-graphite-filled silicone rubber O-rings and gaskets are widely used in commercial applications. Aerospace and defense applications often require materials conforming to MIL-DTL-83528 standards, and these materials typically contain silver-based fillers.

Electromagnetic shielding O-rings and gaskets are numbered in the following format: EMI + Profile Code + Size + Material Code. The size is a predefined standard specification containing all relevant parameters. The following example is a molded EMI O-ring made of fluorosilicone rubber with nickel-graphite filler, with a size of 155 (0.103-inch cross-sectional diameter, 3.987-inch inner diameter).
